What is the Bail Bonding Process?
If you or someone you know has been arrested in North Carolina, you may be wondering what the bail bonds process is. Here is a step-by-step overview:
-
Arrest: Once someone is arrested, they will be taken to a police station or jail. They will be booked and charged with a crime.
-
Initial appearance: The defendant will appear before a judge or magistrate shortly after being arrested. The judge will set bail, which is the amount of money that the defendant must pay in order to be released from jail.
-
Posting bail: If the defendant cannot afford to pay bail themselves, they can contact a bail bondsman. The bail bondsman will pay the bail on behalf of the defendant for a fee, which is typically 15% of the bail amount.
-
Release from jail: Once the bail has been paid, the defendant will be released from jail. They must agree to appear in court on their scheduled court date.
